I remember in Diablo 2 there was some kind of summonable that followed you around and picked up all your loot for you. That would be fun as I often tend to forget to pick my stuff. In any case, I'd like the feature proposed by the OP.

Probably it was mentioned before but I think it will be really neat to give this function to minipets

A guild mate and I were talking about this last night. I would however like to see a enable/disable button like the auto-targeting they just added.

Its a case of what enhances the game and what just bogs it down. As it is picking up gold is not a task that requires great skill or a vast knowledge of the game. Its just something that gets in the way of playing it.

By this logic, you could say picking up items period bogs down the game, since that too doesn't take great skill or vast knowledge of the game. At this point, no monster drops anything except quest items. May not seem like a big deal, but what you're doing is stepping that much closer to Final Fantasy style play. "Enemy defeated! Your party gains 234 exp and 100 gold. Your character leveled up!"
And okay, it's only a game, but an optimal game for me doesn't mean getting rid of everything which doesn't require skill. Picking up gold helps keep me in the mindset of the game. Everytime I'd see 'Your party gained 100 gold, and your share is 12 gold", I'd be reminded I was playing a game. Picking up gold is something you'd have to do if it were reality, and keeps it more 'realistic' (and of course I use that word loosely, but I mean to say that you can see yourself there).

Picking up items takes up inv space so its something you would choose or not. Gold doesnt so there is no downside to it being automatically given.
I do agree that it can pull you out of the game world a bit but then there are so many things that are left out simply because adding them wouldnt grant the game anything extra and in some cases would even lessen the games appeal. The fact is when you pick gold up you see a message about gold being split between you anyway, so how is that any different?

MMORPG's aren't always about the convenience of becoming the richest person the easiest. It's about the experience, and picking up gold adds to that experience. See stuff like Diablo and Diablo 2, one of the oldest forms of popular online RPGs.

I don't think auto-gold has anything at *all* to do with becoming richer easier. It's only to alleviate having to press that button every few seconds, which - imo anyway - doesn't add anything fun and exciting to the gameplay.
It's not like it takes "skill" to pick up gold. I don't find it "fun" to pick up gold. There is no space management involved like there is with items. There is never any reason not to drop gold in favor of better gold.
I still don't see what's so great about having to pick it up, and why picking up XP and faction points wouldn't be fun and engaging as well.

I've seen similar features in other games. What I'd like is to have the ability to autopickup selected classes of items e.g. all, money, blue, purple, gold, green etc. You then select which "classes" of item you want to regularly pick up and a single keystroke will get the job done (after combat/when convenient of course )
Can't see any downside to this myself......
